Northern Liberties

Prior to 1860, The Black community in Northern Liberties was connected through economic, religious and educational networks. They were also connected to Underground Railroad organizations.  We calculate that approximately 1500-2000 people a year escaped enslavement in the south and came through Philadelphia. The networks in Northern Liberties enabled the flow to arrive safely.
